Storm petrel, 2017

We’ve just finished another season of Storm-petrel ringing, again in partnership with the University of Cardiff, United Kingdom. A project that has nearly 30 years of duration (27 to be exact), the data we collect is still a source of surprises. This year was another year of low catches. However the numbers of the last three nights, with the most surprising highest peak of this year, helped to improve the average night catch. The numbers of foreign ringed birds are

A list of invasive species in Portugal – 1st version

Invasive species are one of the largest causes of biodiversity loss and extinction. In our country the risks and problems with invasive species are not very well studied yet. We published a list of species - of course still incomplete - that includes all the invasive species in Portugal that were mentioned in scientific literature. At the moment the list presents 431 taxa. If you would like to help with the compilation of this list, you can send your comments and additions to alcobaca@arocha.org. You can

Once, when meeting with a potential large donor, we were told this: your product, what you do and how you do it, it’s great, but your window shop is very poor. We realized then that it’s difficult to get others to joins us in our good work if we don’t communicate it well. For this reason we are starting the process which will lead to contract someone for our permanent staff team. If you are interested, or know of someone who might be interested,

New scientific paper on the Alvor estuary

Scientific research has always been an essential part of A Rocha’s community conservation programmes. For this reason we are happy to announce the publication of a case study on the Ria de Alvor in the journal ‘Ocean and Coastal Management’. Because Ria de Alvor is a small estuary, it is sensitive to small environmental disturbances that can result in dramatic consequences both for its habitats and those who depend on it, from birds and plants to fishermen and shellfish gatherers. But if its size

A ROCHA at ‘Our culture is going out to the streets!’

A ROCHA was present at the event ‘Our culture is going out to the streets!’ in Mexilhoeira Grande. We had a stand where many visitors heard about the natural heritage of Ria de Alvor and the work that A ROCHA has done until now. Adults and children were amazed by the diversity of butterflies and moths found in the area. It was a pleasure to be part of this event!
